Florida Barter CEO Elected to International Role

Founder and CEO of Orlando barter business elected to lead international association’s key committee.

ORLANDO, Fla. (Apr. 7, 2009) – International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA) announced today that Scott Whitmer, the founder and CEO of Florida Barter, the largest independent modern organized barter organization on the entire east coast, has been elected to the position of chairman of the IRTA’s prestigious Uniform Currency Clearinghouse (UCC). The UCC establishes and regulates universal standards for international barter and trade transactions.
“Scott has been an active member of IRTA for more than twenty years, contributing his extensive expertise to ensure our operational and organizational success,” said Ron Whitley, IRTA’s executive director. “He has been instrumental in developing the standards that govern the currency exchange for trade and barter organizations worldwide. His election to chair this extremely important committee is a natural progression.”
Whitmer attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management. He founded Florida Barter nearly twenty-eight years ago. Scott’s participation in IRTA has spanned twenty-six years, during which he served as the organization’s president and a member of its Board of Directors. During his tenure as president, Whitmer assisted in the design and implementation the UCC program.
“I am honored to have been selected by my colleagues and peers to chair this important committee,” said Whitmer. “My years of involvement IRTA have provided a solid foundation upon which I have able to build a successful barter business.”

Scott Whitmer is married to his wife Sana and has four children. The family enjoys sports, boating and spending quality time together.

Berardi has nearly twenty years of experience with Florida Barter – 10 years as a member and the remainder as a valued employee.

“Dom has been a well known face in the Tampa Bay area for a number of years,” said Scott Whitmer, Florida Barter’s president. “He has been instrumental in the success of Florida Barter’s Tampa Bay area team, building a strong client base and developing solutions that incorporate a wide range of client business needs. His performance has earned him this well-deserved promotion.”
A graduate of Bryant College of Smithfield, Rhode Island, Berardi earned a degree in marketing and business management - skills that he used to build an impressive career with well known branded companies. After 19 years as a franchised distributor for Pepperidge Farm, Dom brought his talents to Florida Barter.

Responsibilities of Berardi’s new position include the development, expansion and management of Florida Barter’s Tampa Bay area office.

(May 18, 2009) – Florida Barter, the largest independent organized barter association on the entire east coast, today reported a 33 percent increase in new clients for the first four months of 2009. An impressive 8 percent increase in trade volume, coupled with the dramatic increase in new clients, reflects a steady growth in the use of barter as an alternate business revenue source in today’s tough economic times. Florida Barter is on track to exceed $16 million in trade transactions in 2009.

“Barter has become an important business tool for many small to mid-sized businesses,” noted Scott Whitmer, president and CEO of Florida Barter. “Florida Barter has been serving the business needs of central Florida for nearly 28 years and, for the first time, we see organized barter transactions for services and goods becoming a regular budget line item for more and more small companies.”


Florida Barter serves three major central Florida business markets – Orlando, Tampa, and Daytona Beach. With more than 1600 active members, the company’s trade volume exploded to nearly $5 million from January 1st to April 30th, representing an average monthly trade volume of $1.2 million. A total of 23,484 transactions for the four month period averaged $211 per barter transaction.

International organization awards first Legends of Barter Award

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Oct. 8, 2009) – The International Reciprocal Trade Association (IRTA) awarded its first-ever Legends of Barter award to Scott Whitmer, president and CEO of Winter Park-based Florida Barter. The award was recently presented at IRTA’s 30th Annual Convention held in Dallas, Texas.

“Over the past 28 years, Scott Whitmer has consistently set the standard for the modern trade and barter industry,” said Ron Whitney, IRTA’s executive director. “He has worked tirelessly to promote organized barter as an important business tool and has raised awareness of the industry by growing Florida Barter into the largest independent organized barter system on the entire U.S. east coast.”


The Legends of Barter award recognizes individuals who have served the modern trade and barter industry for a period of 10 or more years from 1979 to 2009. During that time the honoree, as evidenced through positive and identifiable actions, has measurably contributed to the shape, definition and growth of the modern trade and barter industry. Nominations for the award were received from around the world.

“I am so pleased to be the recipient of this prestigious award,” said Whitmer. “To be recognized for excellence by your peers is, in my opinion, the highest possible honor.”
